Dave Chappelle Booed, Hecked During Detroit Show: Stand-Up "Not His Best"

Dave Chappelle faced one tough crowd during his Detroit comeback stand-up performance this weekend. Delivering a well-received early set at The Fillmore, Chappelle took to the stage later in the evening Thursday, April 23 for a 9:30 p.m. show that left fans demanding refunds.

In town for six shows on his comeback stand-up tour, Chappelle chain-smoked, slurred his speech, and rambled, according to attendees. "Horrible, don't go," Heather Becker wrote on The Fillmore's Facebook page.  "Second show last night was ridiculous. Walked out. Did not get what I paid for . . . refunds please!"

Other attendees of the Comedy Central vet’s performance said Chappelle seemed intoxicated, yelling back to hecklers during the show. "We waited over two hours for him to start the show but he never did. Instead, he slurred and swayed through random questions that were screamed at him from the audience and for the few jokes that he did actually tell, he repeated two - embarrassing," patron Brandy Kodetsky wrote on Facebook, making her case for a refund.

Sensing fans' disappointment at the Fillmore set, a rep for the 41-year-old comic acknowledged the poor performance, but did not elaborate on Chappelle's off-putting antics. "Out of the 50 shows on the tour, Thursday was definitely not his best set," the rep told TMZ. “On the flip side, the incident inspired some additional sharp-witted material and [Friday] he came back with a vengeance."

As the host of Comedy Central's The Chappelle Show from 2003 to 2006, the comic is no stranger to mixed audience reactions. In March, a New Mexico fan was arrested after throwing a banana peel at the comedian, and Chappelle famously stormed off stage and cut his show in Connecticut short after being heckled by fans in 2013.
